Folklore Tea

Assam is synonymous with tea the world over. Yet the average urban youth is blissfully ignorant about the rich cultural heritage of Assam tea. So was the case with Subhasish and Bidisha. Being a native of Assam, Subhasish spent numerous vacations in and around tea gardens, exploring them on foot and capturing their beauty on his camera. But he never delved any deeper than that. Bidisha would meet a lot of foreigners as part of her profession and would always be asked about Assam tea. When the two met, conversations about ‘home’ would invariably touch upon the topic of tea. Though both felt a great degree of pride in Assam being recognized as the Mecca of tea, their mutual ignorance would cut short any further exploration of the topic. And they realized there were many like them, who were ignorant of the knowledge about this living heritage. Also, there are many who are unaware of the contribution of small tea growers and their spirits which has been able to sustain this heritage. Folklore is a humble initiative that intends to reduce the existing gap, at least marginally between a tea drinker and the one growing their teas.Folklore tea comprises of the natives and locals of the region and the surrounding areas who grow tea in their small gardens, and sometimes even kitchen gardens. Folklore is associated with these small tea growers who are engaged in sustainable and natural tea farming practices, where not even organic fertilizers are used. Due to marginal land sizes, the plucking of fresh leaves is limited and hence the production of made tea is also limited. Folklore tea encourages the small tea growers in experimenting with new teas, where they study and optimize each step in tea processing to produce experimental batch teas. Ditching the use of machines, these tea artisans invariably depend on their masterful hands for processing at every step and hence the teas are handcrafted in the truest sense. These small family-owned tea farm owners have blended into the tea elements, experiences, and flavors of the land that they come from. Folklore is the narrative of the flavors their teas hold.
